Blue Gum Squash Club approached me to help redesign their website and develop a cohesive visual identity, including brand guidelines, social media tiles, posters, and banners for the club.
The club had recently received government funding for its FutureSquash Program, an initiative focused on increasing participation among women and girls. At the same time, there had been growing interest in squash from younger generations. Together, these changes created a strong need to refresh the club’s website and strengthen its online presence.
The goal of the project was to make the website more accessible to a broader audience while ensuring the mostly volunteer-run club could confidently manage the site and maintain an active social media presence after the project was completed.
The first stage involved creating brand guidelines that would shape the look and feel of the website and supporting promotional materials. Accessibility was a key priority, as many future users of the guidelines had limited design experience. The document needed to be clear, practical, and easy to follow, while still providing enough detail for consistent application.
As the logo was remaining unchanged, I worked within its existing visual language and colour palette. I developed a primary palette of blue and off-white, supported by a range of secondary colours and tints. Using the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0, I ensured the primary colour combinations met AAA compliance standards and included examples of combinations that should be avoided.
For the primary typeface, I selected the sans-serif font Plus Jakarta Sans. It feels modern and approachable, while also being highly legible for vision-impaired users. It is also freely available through Google Fonts, making it easy for the club to use across future materials.
Once the brand guidelines were approved, we moved into the website design phase. I collaborated closely with the client to refine the website copy and developed several pages based on their briefs and the objectives for each section.
To reinforce the club’s identity, I created custom graphic elements such as squash balls and blue gum seed pods, which appear throughout the site. Combined with the clean colour palette and soft shapes, these details helped create a welcoming, energetic, and accessible user experience.
For social media, I designed a series of editable Canva templates that the committee could continue using long after the project ended. This gave them the tools to produce consistent and engaging content without requiring specialist design skills.
For printed materials, I designed a suite of posters in InDesign before converting them into Canva templates. This ensured future posters could be easily updated by volunteers while remaining aligned with the established brand guidelines.
The feedback from the club committee was overwhelmingly positive. When I was first brought on board, there had been some hesitation about whether a redesign was necessary. By the end of the project, the value of a stronger, more accessible brand presence was clear, and the committee felt confident managing their communications moving forward.
